A mysterious blackmailer accuses businessman Viktor Vetrov of murdering his own wife. Victor's life turns into hell: his business collapses, his friends betray him, and the investigative authorities are digging the earth, trying to find at least some evidence to send him to jail. The only person who took Vetrov’s side was his former lover, now investigator of the Investigative Committee Inga Alme.
